Leading with Confidence-Leader looking into sunset

A friend of mine recently gave me a copy of a book that I never would have picked up on my own. It’s a far cry from the research-based strategy, leadership, and teamwork tomes that normally grace my desk or bedside table.

Heart Talk by Cleo Wade is a book that offers poetic wisdom on self-love, acceptance, and personal growth. Wade’s reflections and the accompanying artwork encourage readers to embrace their authentic selves and recognize the beauty in their imperfections. The Amazon.com description mentions that the author has been called a “millennial Oprah” by New York Magazine.

Looking past its inherent softness and occasional cotton candy platitudes, I think the book has an important message for leaders. The author’s perspective aligns seamlessly with what I’ve observed over my decades of working in leadership development and coaching—that the most successful leaders are grateful for their journeys, appreciate their evolving selves, and lead with both confidence and humility.

Leadership is an inside job.

In the realm of leadership, self-belief and confidence are indispensable. They empower leaders to navigate challenges, inspire teams, and drive organizations toward success. However, it is essential to recognize that leaders are not infallible; embracing one’s imperfections and acknowledging the continuous journey of personal growth often leads to more authentic and effective leadership.

The Power of Self-Belief in Leadership

Self-belief serves as the foundation upon which leadership is built. This Forbes article describes just one study (there have been many!) that validates self-confidence as a beneficial trait for leaders. In my firsthand experience working with highly successful leaders, I have consistently observed that those who possess confidence (not cockiness) in their abilities are more likely to take decisive actions, motivate their teams, and foster an environment of trust and innovation. An individual’s belief in their capacity to lead is associated with an increased willingness to accept responsibility and pursue success for themselves, their teams, and the organization.

Moreover, self-confidence has become a focal point in leadership development programs. For instance, this Financial Times article describes how business schools are increasingly incorporating personalized coaching and experiential training methods, such as meditation, drama classes, and interacting with horses, to help leaders build self-assurance and resilience.

Embracing Imperfection and the Growth Journey

While confidence is crucial, it is equally important for leaders to acknowledge their imperfections and view them as opportunities for growth. This perspective shift allows leaders to connect more deeply with their teams, demonstrating authenticity and humility.

Embracing vulnerability, a behavior that has blown up due to the research and leadership development framework espoused by Brené Brown, is not a sign of weakness but a testament to a leader’s strength and authenticity. Allowing oneself to be open and genuine fosters deeper connections and paves the way for personal and professional growth. This approach encourages leaders to step out of their comfort zones, leading to more meaningful interactions and emotional growth.

The Ever-Evolving Leader: Cultivating Agency and Gratitude

During a recent HRCI webinar titled “Cultivating Executive Presence: How to Elevate Your Leadership Impact, Dion Leadership’s own VP of Coaching and Consulting Services, Joe LaDuke, quipped, “The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement.” Leadership is not a static trait but an evolving journey. Leaders who continuously seek self-improvement and remain adaptable are better equipped to solve the dynamic and complex challenges put in front of them at their workplace. This evolution involves cultivating a sense of agency—the recognition that one has the power to influence their own life and environment.

Incorporating practices such as self-reflection and mindfulness can enhance a leader’s self-awareness and adaptability. These practices enable leaders to stay attuned to their personal growth and maintain a positive mental attitude, which is crucial for effective leadership and managing their own stress.

Expressing gratitude is another vital aspect of leadership. Gratitude fosters a positive work environment, enhances team morale, and reinforces a leader’s connection with their team. By acknowledging the contributions of others and appreciating the journey, leaders can inspire loyalty and dedication within their organizations.

In Dion Leadership’s 2024 coaching study, 87% of coachees reported that leadership coaching improved their confidence. Both coaches and leaders know that believing in oneself is a cornerstone of effective leadership. However, coupling that confidence with an appreciation for one’s imperfections and a commitment to continuous growth is what leads to a more authentic and impactful leadership style.

By embracing vulnerability, cultivating a positive leadership mindset, and expressing gratitude, leaders can make a strong impact on others and their organization. And, most importantly, they can achieve the impact promised by a self-help book while finding joy and peace in the process.
